Rift
Genre film can often be used to tell old stories in imaginative ways. This is something Erlingur Thoroddsen has understood with Rift. Gunnar and Einar has broken up, but they have different experiences dealing with the break-up. One night, Gunnar receives a phone call from Einar. He sounds upset and tells him that he is at his family's remote cabin «Rökkur». Gunnar worriedly hurries to the cabin to make sure everything is okay. What follows is a touching retelling of their relationship, but also an unnerving psychological thriller where Gunnar is haunted by something way scarier than bad memories. The dramatic Icelandic landscape gives depth both to the haunting eeriness Gunnar experiences and to the emotional scars after the break-up. Those who walk home alone in the dark after seeing Rift is now warned. MWV
