The owls are not what they seem! Agnieszka Hollands absurd eco-thriller premiered at the Berlinale this year. Although it is directed by a veteran known for her work on TV dramas such as Treme, The Killing, and The Wire, and period feature films such as Europa Europa, Spoor feels like a breath of fresh air, with a potential to create an international trend. If Twin Peaks had an environmentalist politcal agenda, it would probably look a bit like Spoor, whose protagonist – the almost-retired Janina Duszejko – lives in a village by a forest riddled with mystery. As the narrative unfolds, in chapters according to the hunting season, more and more dead humans and animals are discovered along the dirt roads and fields near the village. Janina, who sides completely with the animals, does her best to spoil the fun for the hunters. That all of them are men and part of the local and highly incompetent societal elite, adds an enjoyable comical-conspiratorical-feminist layer to the film. MFL
