DU
The unbearable lightness of middle class life! A young couple takes some time off from their ambitious, urban lives to go on holiday at their specially designed holiday home by a fjord in Western Norway. The sunlight reflects beautifully on the sea and life is seemingly beautiful, while the couple try – in vain – to maintain the fragile financial and cultural balance of their relationship.
Director Paul Tunge has had his films screened at both previous editions of Oslo Pix, and returns with his brand new feature film DU. With only two characters, few locations and very little external drama, this film is a textbook example of how much can be achieved through the art of limitation. The film manages to portray a complex romantic relationship, while making us question bigger issues like the nature of masculinity and materialism. DU also makes the absolute most of its physical surroundings: The ocean, the horizon and the freedom that awaits just outside the stylish walls of the cabin – and the pale and shiny surfaces indoors, in which the characters can reflect their selves and one another.
