Fat Front is about the growing body positivity movement, and the fight for respect regardless of body size. Helene, Marte, Pauline and Wilde are four Scandinavian women who are fed up with being ashamed of their bodies. From early childhood long into their adulthood, the idea of a perfect body has robbed them of the courage to follow their dreams. For years, they have received comments on how and what they eat, hypocritical concerns about their health, and hateful remarks from strangers on their looks. On the verge of losing all self-esteem, an awareness has slowly emerged in them that it is in fact possible to love their own bodies, and that others may also think that they are beautiful. The four women demand attention as they fight a fierce battle for their place in society. Is the world ready for a movement that reverses our notions of what a body should look like?

The film, directed by Danish Louise Unmack Kjeldsen and Louise Detlefsens, premiered during the prestigious documentary film festival IDFA and, like most successful documentaries, it is stirring a debate after each screening.

Panel

After the screening on Thursday, August 27, we invite our panel to conversation about body positivity, and to discuss: What is so provocative about larger bodies? How does it feel to live in a society obsessed with the way you look when your body doesn't fit into the clothing sizes in the stores? And why, exactly, are vi so concerned about forcing a body ideal on people that’s impossible to live up to, and that causes more and more people to struggle mentally?

The panel consists of body positivists Carina Elisabeth Carlsen and Nastaran Marie Kowkabi, as well as Marte Nyman and Wilde Siem from the film. The panel will be moderated by Helene Aalborg.

N.B. The directors Louise Kjeldsen and Louise Detlefsen’s visit to Oslo is cancelled, due to travel restrictions following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The screening is a part of the programme section Pix Politics and is supported by the Fritt Ord Foundation.
