Erik Poppe

Erik Poppe (born 1960) is one of Norway’s most experienced and award-winning directors. His last movie, Utvandrerne, premiered in August of 2022. He is originally a photographer and has garnered great acclaim for his feature films nationally and internationally among audiences and critics. 

He debuted as a film director with Schpaaa in 1998 and has since received a list of international awards and won the Amanda Award for Best Film with Hawaii, Oslo in 2004, and A Thousand Times Good Night in 2014. Troubled Water was voted the Best Norwegian Film by cinema managers in 2008, and it was the first film in history to receive both the Audience Award and the Award for Best Film during the Hamptons International Film Festival the same fall. 

In 2016, Poppe directed The King’s Choice, which was shortlisted for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film and was a part of the Panorama program at Berlinale in 2017. The film won the Amanda Award for Best Film in 2017. Poppe also received the Film Critics Award for The King’s Choice in 2017. This was his fourth time receiving this award. The film Utøya 22. July was part of the competition program in Berlinale in 2018.
